Still been a rough few weeks. Still dealing with health and financial issues plus a close friend, of more than thirty years, has just been diagnosed with Stage Four stomach cancer.

His tumor is rare and particularly nasty. Even with chemo it doesn't look good but he's a fighter. Heck, he had his first round of chemo yesterday and today he and his band, the Bowlers, are playing at the Ohio State Fair. As Danya put it, he may have to sit his 'Rocking Ass down for it but he'll be there". Mike is their lead guitarist.

Mike and Danya are two of the nicest people on this planet! Danya is a Vet, Mike is an incredible artist/musician. Each year at WonderFest he designs a Plaque to honor the show based on Lee's designs for the show that year. They are always beautiful and true works of art. As soon as I can I'm going to be taking pictures of any of the previous year's Plaques we still have to post to eBay so I can send anything we can make off them along via Mike's paypal account.

Before he got sick, Mike was feeding and caring for several feral cat colony's in Columbus. Besides their own menagerie of fur balls they've rescued and love at home. You wouldn't believe the cat runs, the cat sun room he's designed for them, they're amazing. Both of them truly live lives of service to others, be they human or tend to purr. A GoFundme has been set up to help them with the massive medical bills they're facing right now. Please, if you can, take a look, definitely share the link if you wouldn't mind:

As for me, still fighting to get over this latest flareup of my lupus. Plus, I'm still trying to sell whatever I can to help us pay bills and make ends meet. I'm getting stuff posted to Ebay to sell now that my vision has settled down a little from my flare. If you guys wouldn't mind sharing what I've posted I'd really appreciate it. Here's the link:

http://stores.ebay.com/Barbaras-Essentials

If you see anything you'd like, but would rather pay for it here, let me know and I can tell you what it'd be with postage. My Paypal is bstaton@iglou.com. If you do buy something, if you wouldn't mind, send payment for it via friends and family. That way they don't take out all the fees.

Any help passing this along would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to keep adding stuff to sell as I can get pictures taken. If you guys wouldn't mind sharing what I've posted I'd really appreciate it. Here's the link:

The Adventure Zone is doing a live show in a city an hour away from me in December! My friend sent me money so I can buy a ticket when they go on sale this Friday. I'm so grateful and excited.

Less exciting is, of course, the US political news today. As a trans person I'm just kind of. Trying to focus on the positive things in my life right now so that I don't get overwhelmed with the negative feelings. Obviously there's a lot of work to do. A lot of fighting to do. But right now I need to enjoy some good things while I try and get a grip on all this.

So, I may have signed myself up to review every item in the house.

We're preparing for a major move and significantly smaller living space, so in a way, Everything Must Go, and in a way, we'll want to take very specific items along. I'm using my favorite Thing A Day method - if I can do one thing a day, no matter how small, I'll get an awful lot done!

My deadline isn't until next spring, and it's not set in stone yet, so right now I'm getting my checklists in order and my expectations set. It helps that my spouse, Star, has been wanting to get some stuff out of the house anyway. We decided just to go whole hog - anything that seems like it ought to go, goes, and we don't have to wait for the deadline to get things out of the house.

Monday, we sat down and figured out where several large items ought to go. (Family members and friends, mostly. And if they don't want them, to donation.)

Yesterday, I listed several collectors' items for price checks and got a nibble from an interested buyer.

Today, I need to get photos and get a sales thread up. I'll be adding to it as I go - I tend to be a thing collector, so I have a lot of things to get rid of.

Mid-week uncluttering

How has everyone's uncluttering been going this week?

As previously advertised, I took the box (and some other bits and pieces) out of the front hall, and donated it. Not quite as virtuous as I might have been, because I took it to the op-shop that has the really good second-hand book section (bigger than the whole area of some op-shops) and came home with 11 new books (at least two are ones I already have, which are for a friend who I know was looking for this hard-to-find, probably out of print author).

As to yesterday and today, I can't actually point at anything. I've been doing *something* because the house is much tidier than it was (oh, and I cleared some of the things out of the fridge), but nothing that feels like having picked things to rehome. I do keep looking at a shelf in the lounge, but there is too much on it that I'd have to find homes for at present. But, oh, it would be nice to have that bit of wall back.

About Me/Other Info: If you Google my name, you will see I have written erotica not related to fandom, penned a movie script, and graduated from HS (lol) I'm queer in some way, still figuring out the specifics, and I'm a liberal. No trumpsters, sexists/racists/homophobes please. As long as you are a nice person I'll be nice back. :) I'm also mentally and chronically ill, so you might see stuff about that but not too much.

[personal profile] jothra went to a library sale last week and asked if I had any requests: "Weird 70s Gothics? Trixie, Belden?"

"WEIRD 70S GOTHICS PLEASE," I said, and Jo duly carried out her commission so well that I don't know if anybody's ever going to top it:

Portrait in Jig-Saw is apparently so obscure it doesn't even have a Goodreads page, which, having read it, I can honestly now say is kind of a shame.

Our Heroine's name is Alixander David Somerlaid MacDonald (I KNOW), otherwise known as Alisdair; she is a Strictly Sheltered Heiress who has been raised in a Freezing Castle in Complete Isolation and Solitude with only occasional visits from her father until she comes of age on her 21st birthday.

...for the record, the year is 1973.

My legit favorite part about these spoilers is that the entire plot relies on an alternate universe where the world's most famous postmodern novelist is a Thai princess, I want to live in THAT universe! )

Almost There

Whew! Sorry about my last few posts--they've been lackluster, mostly because I feel lackluster, or at least drained. Wrapping up the big bang fic is eating up all my motivation and inspiration, but I've finally cleared the minimum word count and things are starting to wind down towards an ending. Parts of this fic I love. Other parts I'm not wild over. But it's the longest thing I've written in years, and I still can't quite believe that I'm about to finish it. There's a quote--okay, calling it a "quote" is pretty strong; I think it's actually something Georgia from My Favorite Murder said--anyway, there's a line about how perfection isn't the point, but making things--even imperfect things--is. That's how I feel about this fic. Will it be perfect? Not even close. But who cares? It'll be there

Yeah, I'm a little emotional over this. Also really, really ready for it to be done.

I've been making an effort to read more in order to combat the whole drained-of-any-extra-inspiration feeling. Just started Leviathan Wakes, the first book in The Expanse series. I'm up to chapter eight, and even though no single character has especially grabbed me yet, the worldbuilding's fantastic and I'm excited by the hints of deeper creepiness to come. Nonfiction-wise, I'm well into another Ann Rule book (Small Sacrifices). With both these books, I feel like I'm gulping down the main story without savoring (or even absorbing) most of the details. Oh, well. I can always reread, and at least I am reading; whenever I get deep into a fic I tend to forget to read enough. And then wonder why my all my inspiration is suddenly gone.

(Also, Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero has been sitting on my desk's bookshelf since Christmas and somehow I've barely cracked the cover. This needs to change. Soon.)
